This essay is a response to Philippe Eynaud, Clément Feger and Corinne Vercher-Chaptal’s (2024) invitation in their opening article of this special issue to examine the “blind spots” in current research on the commons. We use critical perspectives to unveil the harmful aspects of the commons, their dark side, known as negative commons (Mies & Bennholdt-Thomsen, 2001; Monnin, 2021), which are increasing in the midst of contemporary socio-ecological crises and injustices (Tsing, 2015b). This insightful critique – and, by extension, this essay – offers an opportunity to politicize negative common within modern capitalism.
