“Ultra-peripheral” region of Europe since 2014 and a French overseas department since 2011, Mayotte has to comply with European and national phytosanitary requirements. Our study focuses on the impact of collective organization on the implementation of more environmentally friendly practices. We focus on tomato production, which is extremely susceptible to pests. The empirical originality of the study is the constitution of an exhaustive database of formal producers in Mayotte. The theoretical originality is to have considered and demonstrated the importance of the cognitive, structural, and relational dimensions of social capital in achieving the common goal of reducing pesticides; and the role of the collective dimension in the individual decision-making process.
