Abstract

This study looks at how middle managers exercise their environmental leadership in industrial plants with varied engagement profiles for environmental risk management. A qualitative empirical study was conducted among thirteen middle managers of French territorialized industries with a high environmental impact. Our results highlight the individual logics favored by managers and how they are likely to express them in their organizational environment. In this regard, their managerial discretion is characterized by the identification of their key enabling and binding factors. Our results are useful for understanding the conditions of exercise of environmental leadership in the field and propose a framework of analysis that may serve as a starting point for future research anchored in singular case studies.
